Cummins and Buller Industries, a leading tractor manufacturer under the Versatile brand, announced on August 29th that they had signed a letter of intent to integrate Cummins 15-liter hydrogen engines to lead decarbonization in the agricultural market. Ann Schmelzer, general manager of Cummins' global agricultural business, said Versatile is a manufacturer with a long history in agriculture and a reputation for excellence in tractors. Both sides are committed to providing customers with technology, quality and reliability. Cummins is pleased to cooperate with Versatile to give full play to their respective strengths and create new opportunities for the two companies.
Since 1967, Versatile has been using Cummins engines exclusively in all four-wheel drive tractors. For decades, both sides have been leaders in technological innovation and providing reliable performance to farmers around the world. Both sides have unique advantages and stride forward to new power system technology on the basis of outstanding history in the field of agriculture.
Adam Reid, vice president of sales and marketing at Versatile, said that diesel engines will remain a flexible choice for agriculture for the foreseeable future, and such a partnership will enable the two companies to jointly develop low-carbon and zero-carbon solutions suitable for agricultural production.
Cummins recently announced plans to build hydrogen engines using existing platforms and spark ignition technology expertise. The high degree of versatility between diesel and hydrogen engine components provides equipment manufacturers with the advantage of scale, as well as the reliability that farmers need.
Hydrogen energy will provide a cost-effective zero-carbon fuel solution for high load rate and high utilization applications. The main benefits of using this technology include providing more timely solutions to reduce carbon emissions without sacrificing productivity. Minimizes the impact on the manufacturer's machine design, allowing cross-platform general-purpose parts to drive scale advantages and reduce costs. When integrated into agricultural equipment, farmers will have a reliable and easy-to-maintain solution.
About Versatile.
Versatile is a Canadian agricultural machinery manufacturer. Founded in 1966 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Since its inception more than 50 years ago, more than 100000 tractors have been produced. The factory is characterized by the manufacture, assembly, research, development and field testing of high-power tractors.
In 1999, Buller Industries acquired Versatile's tractor production line, and on November 1, 2007, combine manufacturer Rostselmash acquired 80 per cent of the common shares of Versatile and announced that the Versatile brand name would once again be the only name for the tractor business.
On March 14, 2019, Kubota reached an agreement with Buller Industries to produce more powerful tractors with a power of more than 170 horsepower. Before that, Kubota's most powerful tractor was its 175-horsepower M7172.
Under the terms of this long-term agreement, Buller Industries produces the tractor at its factory in Winnipeg, Versatile. Kubota used it to accelerate its large tractor business in the North American market.
Versatile is the first company to produce articulated four-wheel drive tractors on a large scale, producing D100 and G100 since 1966. By modern standards, those groundbreaking tractors are primitive, equipped with six-cylinder diesel or eight-cylinder gas engines that can generate 100 horsepower. The 1966 model sells for less than C $10,000.
The company produces and distributes its products under the Versatile and Farm King brands. The multi-function equipment series includes tractors and farming machinery. The company has manufacturing plants and warehouses in Canada and the United States.
